How Spyware Affects Internet Advertising †Information Technology Essay

How Spyware Affects Internet Advertising – Information Technology Essay Free Online Research Papers How Spyware Affects Internet Advertising Information Technology Essay Have you noticed that your computer runs slower than when you first purchased it? The most likely culprit is SpyWare. It’s a software program that snoops on your browsing activity. It collects information from your computer and sends the data to anyone willing to pay for it, without your permission and knowledge. Typically, marketing companies use your personal details to inundate you with advertisements of their products by using AdWare. AdWare is a software program that causes advertising banners and pop-ups to be displayed on your computer. SpyWare and AdWare slow down the computer, cause crashes, interfere with the web browser and also slow down the internet connection. If you are paying for dial-up internet access, SpyWare is literally costing you money. Spyware has eclipsed viruses as the fastest growing online threat. Simply surfing the Internet, reading emails and downloading files can infect your personal computer (PC) without you even knowing it. SpyWare’s ability to track keystrokes, scan hard drives, and change system and registry settings is a tremendous personal and enterprise security threat. It can lead to identity theft, data corruption and even theft of company secrets. While SpyWare is typically not hazardous to your PC, it is annoying. It is the next generation of spam. Industry experts say that SpyWare will be the number one threat to network security. Rising SpyWare threats and increasing demand for protection have forced established security vendors to build, buy, or partner with standalone anti-SpyWare vendors. While a number of anti-SpyWare solutions are available as free downloads, there are other paid solutions from market leaders like Symantec, Trend Micro and McAffee. In the last six months of 2004, AdWare programs made up 5% of the top 50 Symantec customer reports while Webhancer was the most frequently reported SpyWare program, representing 38% of the top ten SpyWare reported. 5 Tips on How to Work with an Editor

5 Tips on How to Work with an Editor 5 Tips on How to Work with an Editor 5 Tips on How to Work with an Editor By Mark Nichol You’ve retained an editor’s services and have received the edited version of your manuscript or article, or you are reviewing the work of a staff or freelance editor working for a publication you have submitted your content to. If you haven’t worked with an editor before, you may be disconcerted by the amount of editing that has been done. But whether you’re a novice or a veteran, these guidelines will help you have a productive relationship with the editor. 1. Respect Objectivity An editor experiences your work dispassionately. Whether he or she simply engages with a decent manuscript or exults in the opportunity to help craft a classic, the editor is not emotionally involved. Take advantage of this fortunate fact by carefully considering any changes, comments, or suggestions the editor makes about your work Is a character in a novel too good or too evil, or inconsistent in behavior or inadequately portrayed? Is your how-to book poorly organized or too sparse or too dense? Have you inserted yourself too obtrusively into an essay? An editor will let you know. Trust his or her outside perspective. An editor is the reader’s representative, and as he or she reacts to the content, so, likely, will your intended readership. 2. Cool Off If something an editor does or says puts you off, do not respond immediately. Consider the substance, not the delivery, of the critique, then reply or accept the comment or the change with good grace or reject it with good grace based on its merits. Don’t be defensive. Good editors are generally diplomatic, but few people can avoid saying something the wrong way sometimes. (Editors should follow this advice from their end, too.) 3. Pick Your Battles Editors reorganize syntax and replace words, among other tasks. Sometimes these are optional changes, made because the editor believes that another word or a recast sentence works better and sometimes because the original word is wrong or the original sentence is confusing or ungrammatical. In the former case, feel free to disagree, but understand that an editor may revise dozens or even hundreds of words or sentences, and you’re wise to let most of them pass without comment. That said, if you strongly believe in challenging a change, politely ask the editor about his or her rationale for making it. If the editor informs you that the revision corrects an error, thank him or her perhaps before asking for clarification so that you can avoid repeating such mistakes and move on. If a particular edit is discretionary but strongly advised, use your good judgment about accepting or rejecting it. (But see the next item’s second paragraph, too.) 4. Be Prepared to Rewrite When you work with a developmental editor, he or she will likely recommend that you do a lot of rewriting. (If you thought you had submitted the final draft, you were naive.) You will likely be advised to do significant reorganizing of sections and recasting of sentences. The editor will suggest that you add new content and delete existing material. A copy editor will send you a list of queries, or embed comments in the manuscript, or both. A good copy editor will usually understand what you were trying to say and will improve unclear or verbose content, but occasionally he or she may be unsure of your intent, or may ask you to confirm that the revision better reflects it. You are always welcome to revise a revision, and good editors are happy to know that they prompted you to come up with something better than both the original and their alteration. 5. Accept Fallibility Even the best editors sometimes misunderstand material or make a mistake. If you catch an editor’s error, go ahead and gloat a little, but then politely inform the editor, who should appreciate receiving clarification or learning something new. Forbearance is especially important if the content is especially esoteric or technical. Of course, if errors are numerous or you are otherwise dissatisfied with the editing, or the relationship becomes strained for some reason, try to resolve the difficulty calmly. If your efforts are not productive, check in with a staff editor’s manager and ask for advice or action, or inform the freelance editor that you will pay him or her for the work already done but have decided to retain the services of another editor. Assignment Example Likely trained as a Priest himself, Fulcher of Chartres (c. 1059 - ?) was one of the earliest historians of the First Crusade (1095-1099), a military expedition undertaken by European Christians to regain the ‘Holy Lands’ and recapture Jerusalem. In the particular excerpt from Fulcher’s chronicle that I have assigned to you, Fulcher recounts Pope Urban II’s (1088-1099) speech at the Council of Clermont. This speech is thought to have launched the First Crusade. incumbent (someone currently holding an official position); diocese (bishopric or area under the authority of a particular bishop); patriarch (a leading bishop in the Orthodox Church of the Byzantine Empire); ecclesiastical (of or referring to the church); patriarchate (area under the authority of a particular patriarch); cathedral chapter (body of clergymen formed to advise a bishop or, in his absence, govern the particular area under his authority); cultic (of or pertaining to worship According to Barlett, Latin Europe is that component of Europe which was predominantly Roman Catholic from the very beginning. The zone had common characteristics in geographical and cultural context. Latin was the dominant language for communication with a combination of Latin and Roman culture. Internal differences existed in the Latin Europe of the early Middle Ages unlike Latin Europe of the later Middle Ages. (Bartlett, 1) The ‘Latins’ were also referred as ‘Franks’. In the initial half of the ninth century, the Christian West and the Franskish Empire shared the same boundary. Frankish Europe as per Bartlett’s definition is the land of Carolingians. This was the center of the West. Some parts of England, Northern Italy, France and West Germany were also included. During the High Middle Ages, this part of the Empire may be regarded as central. Review and Insights - Essay Example Additionally, both sides must be contrasted, or shown what is different about each position, in the essay. Argumentative essays are another subject altogether. When you revise your argumentative essay, Kirszner (1999) recommends that you should keep at least some of the following questions in mind: The same could be applied to persuasive essays. It is of utmost significance in a persuasive essay, above all, to make a well-formed and logical argument. The writer’s position does not necessarily matter so much, as much as does the attitude of the writer and the evidence that the writer has to support his or her assertions. A passionate persuasive argument is part of the persuasive essay, but the essay will not reach its intended purpose without the proper evidentiary support. In that regard, it is much like the argumentative essay, but slightly different in that the attitude of the writer must convince the reader based largely on an emotional appeal as well. A well-written case study is one in which the writer is in the position to analyze and manage an imaginary real-life situation. The case study’s purpose is to give the analyst experience in how he or she would approach a particular problem and solve it in a potential actual setting. The exemplar case study is one which: first, gives the details and background about the case; second, provides scenarios as to what is the desired outcome or potential outcomes of the case study; and thirdly, discusses why the solution(s) given to the problem is/are the best, and why one recommendation was chosen over the other for the problem. There are certain tips that can be followed in order to ensure success in writing quality research papers and essays. James Foley (2001) mentions a few useful things he had his students do in order to get involved in the process of researching papers; adequate preparation for completing research required a

Tennysons Merlin and Vivien Essay -- Lord Alfred Tennyson Papers

Tennyson's Merlin and Vivien Known as one of Victorian England's finest poets, Lord Alfred Tennyson epitomized the agony and despondency of the degradation of one's character. His masterpiece, The Idylls of the King, explicates the grand scheme of corruption of the Authurian age while simultaneously paralleling Tennyson's own internal struggles. A most intriguing chapter of The Idylls, "Merlin and Vivien" portrays the manipulative Vivien, identified as pure evil and hatred, as her corruptive beauty leads to Merlin's self-destruction. The Victorian era, from the coronation of Queen Victoria in 1837 until her death in 1901, was an era of several unsettling social developments that forced writers more than ever before to take positions on the immediate issues animating the rest of society. Thus, although romantic forms of expression in poetry and prose continued to dominate English literature throughout much of the century, the attention of many writers was directed, sometimes passionately, to such issues as the growth of English democracy, the education of the masses, the progress of industrial enterprise and the consequent rise of a materialistic philosophy, and the plight of the newly industrialized worker. In addition, the unsettling of religious belief by new advances in science, particularly the theory of evolution and the historical study of the Bible, drew other writers away from the immemorial subjects of literature into considerations of problems of faith and truth. Tennyson's writing displays evidence of doubt and concern towards England's government, both present and past. His distinctive style can be differentiated from many Victorian poets by diction and syntax alone. Also, Tennyson can b... ... harmony. His poem "Merlin and Vivien" of The Idylls of the King displays Merlin's self-chosen downfall in exchange for the temptations of Vivien, the manipulative evil. "For Merlin, overtalked and overworn,/ Had yielded, told her all the charm, and slept." (ll.963-964) Bibliography: Works Cited Culler, Dwight. The Poerty of Tennyson. London: Yale UP, 1997. 238-239. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Essay

Charlie is a poor boy who lives with his parents and grandparents on both sides. There was a famous gigantic chocolate factory, ran by a man named Willy Wonka. The factory had closed its’ gate for more than fifteen years, no one had ever got in and the workers had never came out. But children loved their chocolates. Once, Wonka held an activity for children who like his chocolate around the world. Five golden tickets were hidden in five of the chocolate bars and whoever got the ticket gets to visit the factory. Charlie was lucky enough to get a golden ticket. The other four lucky children all have characteristics of their own. Augustus is greedy about food, Veruca is spoiled, Violet is boastful, and Mike is over addicted to video games. Their tour in the chocolate factory started out. For the other children wouldn’t listen to Wonka’s words and couldn’t go against the temptations, they each had a bad ending. Augustus fell into the chocolate river, Violet turned into a blue berry, Veruca fell into the garbage hole, and Mike was stretched into a thin shape. The only child left who was not attracted by any temptation was Charlie, who Wonka wanted to pass the factory to. But for Wonka refused to let Charlie bring his family into the factory, he rejected. At last, Charlie helped Wonka reunited his father, who was a dentist and once disagreed Wonka to have any kind of sweets. Charlie agreed to take over the factory and move his whole family into the facility. One very important thing in this movie is family. Charlie wanted to sell the golden ticket and earn some money for his family at first, but then his family supported him to go take a look. Even though the family’s economy was challenged, but all they want was to give Charlie the best. After the tour in the chocolate factory, Wonka decided to pass on his career to Charlie. Charlie refused Wonka for he can not live with his family and this decision helped Wonka found the feeling of love in a family again. Wonka’s father was a dentist, so he never lets little Wonka have any sweets. Wonka was unhappy about that so he decided to run away from home and open a factory with all kinds of candies in it. After he met Charlie and his family, Wonka found back the feeling of family again and Charlie helped him reunited his father. Wonka finally understood, â€Å"Family† is the most precious treasure that nothing would be able to take over its place. In this movie, Charlie’s father worked as a person who just twists the cap of tooth pastes on. He was once fired because new machines were invented to take over him. We can see that the job at that time was just doing one thing over and over again. I’ve found something that shows this phenomenon too. In the factory, Veruca wanted one of the squirrels that worked there. If you look carefully, you can see that all the squirrels look the same, so did all the elves. I think it is trying to tell the readers something. One last thing I want to say about this film is that it showed a serious problem about manners. All five children except Charlie wasn’t taught well by their family and it is actually a very important issue. In the movie, Augustus, Veruca, Violet, and Mike all have bad attitude and terrible habits. Veruca wants everything and Violet always tries to get first place on any events. It refers to the society in modern days; a lot of teenagers do not know what manner and politeness is. Kids became ruder and have no respect to the elders. A lot of children are way to spoiled which make them having a hard time on making friends. Helicopter parents are often seen these days. All these appeared to be nothing but they are actually serious. To be taught unwell can bring kids to bad ending just like the ones that happened to the four kids in the movie. After watching this movie, I’ve found a lot and think a lot. There are many questions that worth us thinking. After all, it is a great movie.
